Perspectives on Copywriting

If you are trying to increase your copywriting skills or maybe just want to have a deeper understanding of how copywriting works with basic human psychology then I highly recommend learning from Jeff Paul. Lately I’ve been studying his Killer Copywriting course. I’ve already noticed an increase in sales simply by tweaking a few things on my sales pages.
One interesting point he touched on in his course is that copywriting has been around for a really LONG time. People have been following the copywriting formula AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) and writing great copy for decades.
Check out this ad that was created over a hundred years ago. Take note that back then, being overweight was considered to be more attractive then being thin.

As you can see they are giving away free information and advice in hopes of gaining new leads. (Yet people still fail to grasp this concept). The ad has a headline, testimonials and does a great job of propelling the reader into the copy. Take some time to look at the advertisements in old magazines or go to your local antique store. You will realize that much of the copy and ideas coming from modern copy has been around for awhile.
If you simply study the ads in the popular magazines you can learn a ton about copywriting on your own. I’ve noticed many of the same ads for information products in the back of magazines that have been running for years. Considering it’s expensive to run an ad in a magazine, do you think just maybe someone’s making money thanks to the copy for the product?
